Sashiko Skirt.

I’ve made this skirt as a school project, my goal in it was to perfect sashiko in its traditional way but for a modern garment. I created the skirt using sustainable materials, in particular, repurposed denim jeans from a thrift store. The designed motif refers to the enormous use of water in denim production. I want to address this problem and further draw attention to the fact that production of this fabric alone uses a lot of water and that the entire fashion industry is really wasteful. Around 3.2% of all water available is used every year by the textile sector. In my project I want to refer to how harmful this line of business really is and try to raise awareness. I want to make people realize that buying one pair of jeans means wasting 5 580l of water, so second hand items are a much better option for the environment.

Stitching the entire motif took me a couple of months (mostly because I didn’t have time to do it regularly) and I had some problems with adjusting the jeans. I had to reconstruct the entire back in order for the skirt to fit me. Even though I had a lot of problems along the way I’m really proud of this project and will continue my journey with sashiko.
